How are you at taking something mediocre and making it stand out? I know I need improvement, but I am getting better at that little game!
A recent fun find was a 10-dollar soft felt hat at what we call a "dime store." I took it home, added pink ribbon and one of my flower pins (both can be taken off easily and switched up), and I love the result! The hat is much more interesting now!
The gray dress needs a slip, more due to static than see-thru, but instead of a regular slip, I added a lined but lightweight, silky, polka-dot skirt underneath. I love layering!
Hats!! Be still my heart! Why did women stop wearing them?

I love OLD. I love VINTAGE. There's a bit in every early decade of the 20th century that appeals to me. The cloche reminds me of the 1920s, but a hat is a hat is a hat. How about some pictures to inspire us?

I do love a cloche, and in fact adore 20's fashion...but it doesn't suit a busty lass like me!

Ooh fabulous idea for the hat! I'm still learning how to wear hats. I have a small head and most hats are too large/too small. Your additions really make the hat a fabulous piece. My favorite hats are cloches, but I like many styles!

That's gorgeous! You have this wonderful historic vibe in your posts, and even in your Etsy shop. I don't know why women stopped wearing hats other than the thought that maybe they thought they were too constricting and related that to feeling constricted in their every day life. But honestly, I feel better in hats, and even with the more years I accumulate.
ReplyDeleteThis works in so many ways. I have hats that I wear only in the winter depths. I get dreadful hat hair, and they are often just too warm to keep on indoors. But I have a black cloche and a brown one, each with a floaty feather on one side. Those seem to work better after the coat comes off.
ReplyDeleteLike most fashions, things go out and come back in, and I suppose hat wearing is just another example. I agree with Joni, I expect it was part of the 1960s rejection of conventional dressing and a yearning for a greater self-expression which marked young women out as different from their mothers. I remember older women still wearing hats, especially on formal occasions, when I was a child.
ReplyDeleteAnd now, wearing a hat is a statement of individual style, since social convention doesn't tell us we have to do so anymore.
Your cloche is so pretty with your embellishments. I wish it was a style that suited me, but alas, it is not to be... Love the layering of your dress over the skirt too. xxxx
